Sustain-Rise: Building Resilient Communities

The Sustain-Rise: Building Resilient Communities project, implemented by Maru Action Development Foundation (MADF) with funding from The Pollination Project, addressed critical issues of climate vulnerability in Kasese District, Western Uganda. The six-month project focused on disaster preparedness and response, climate-resilient agricultural practices, and environmental restoration. Specific activities included:

  • Establishment of Community-Based Early Warning Systems in Nyamwamba and Bulembia Divisions.
  • Training smallholder farmers on climate-smart agricultural practices and establishing demonstration plots.
  • Planting 200 indigenous and fruit tree seedlings to restore degraded areas.

The project directly impacted over 5000 households, trained 30 community volunteers as Community Based Disaster Management Committees, and enhanced ecosystem health through tree planting efforts.

See full details in the project completion report attached.

Key activities include:

  • Establishing community-based early warning systems for disaster preparedness.
  • Promoting climate-resilient agricultural practices to enhance food security.
  • Forming community groups for waste management and environmental conservation.
  • Building partnerships with local organizations and stakeholders to support long-term resilience efforts.

The project enhances community well-being, safeguards livelihoods, and ensures sustainable development through active community engagement, capacity building, and resource mobilization.

Through this initiative, Fred Marule and MADF team continues their commitment towards fostering just, climate-resilient communities, positively impacting over 5,000 residents in Kasese District.
